Limescale

Limescale, or more commonly known as boiler scale, is noticed as white spots on dishes such as glasses, plates, forks, spoons, as well as in sinks or on bathroom tiles. Its presence is much more common in places where water is heated, such as boilers, washing machines, dishwashers, coffee makers, pots, and others.

The reason for the appearance of boiler scale is hard water, which contains a significant amount of dissolved minerals. Very hard water shortens the life of your pipes and electrical appliances much more quickly and reduces the effectiveness of cleaning products such as soap or laundry detergent. When hard water is heated, the carbonate substances in the water settle in the pipes and form hard scale. In addition to narrowing and clogging pipes, the accumulated limescale acts as an insulator and increases energy consumption for heating.

For example, a boiler will require much more energy than usual when it has limescale buildup to make the water hot. Soap is much less effective in hard water because it reacts to the formation of calcium or magnesium salt in the organic acids of the soap. These types of salts are insoluble and lead to the formation of a gray soap scum that does not have the same cleaning properties. And in the washing machine, pipes get clogged and heaters get damaged, making it unusable over time.

All of this can be prevented by installing our Mineral Water Doctor products. Such a device is installed after the water meter in the home and helps prevent the buildup of limescale in electrical appliances and pipes throughout the home. This will extend the life of all water-using appliances and improve the taste of the water itself.
